Metformin is prescribed to treat Type 2 diabetes and now PCOS. Metformin helps regulate the blood sugar and insulin levels in PCOS sufferers. The idea is that when our sugars are regulated our symptoms may clear a bit and allow for weight loss, fertility and less cardiovascular risk.
Metformin for PCOS has been proven to help overweight sufferers lose weight and many women have conceived using Metformin! It’s definitely worth a try to see if Metformin helps your symptoms.
I have been on and off of Metformin for a few years. Although I suffered zero side effects from the Metformin, I still have issues actually remembering to take the pills and understanding the concept that I have to take these pills. I always hope to naturally heal myself- but sometimes it’s just not possible!
Minimizing Metformin Side Effects
Your doctor will instruct you on the dosage, etc. But I can tell you how I took it and I experienced NO SIDE EFFECTS! I started the pills in the evening, I took only 1 pill for 4 days, every night, then bumped it up to 2 pills a day.
- At dinner I would always start with a low-sugar probiotic yogurt, this will coat your stomach and prepare it for the pill.
- Eat 75% of your dinner, then take the pill, then eat the last 25% of your dinner.
- When starting 2 pills a day- follow the above steps for breakfast.
- Reduce refined sugar intake, it will give you an upset stomach.
Metformin cannot be taken on an empty stomach. Probiotic yogurt is key to reducing your side effects!

Metformin for PCOS Benefits
Metformin is famous in the PCOS world for helping us lose weight. Many Metformin users have seen dramatic weight loss, or at least help losing that stubborn weight.
Metformin is also used to aide in fertility, it’s especially successful when paired with Clomid.
My Experience with Metformin
I was so excited to start on Metformin, I was positive it would help me lose weight and perhaps aide in fertility. My first round of Metformin lasted 3 months, I had zero side effects. I also didn’t lose any weight, nor get pregnant. Yes, I probably should have stayed on it, but after 3 months I wanted to go more natural. I stopped the Metformin and then re-started a few months later. I fell into the same cycle and quit Metformin.
I was hoping that I would I see immediate improvement with the Metformin, but I didn’t. I also was still snacking on sugars and getting upset stomachs, so instead of stopping the sugars (which I now do!) I stopped the meds.
More than likely I will start Metformin again, and hopefully last a little longer on it!
